The opening of Proverbs, a wisdom literature piece from the Old Testament, presents a

compelling invitation to prioritize the pursuit of wisdom above all else.

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

 To know wisdom and instruction,

To discern the sayings of understanding,

 To receive instruction in wise behavior,

Righteousness, justice, and integrity;

 To give prudence to the naive,

To the youth knowledge and discretion,

A wise person will hear and increase in learning,

And a person of understanding will acquire wise counsel,

To understand a proverb and a saying,

The words of the wise and their riddles.

Proverbs 1: 1-6

These verses offer a collection of valuable insights into Old Testament wisdom literature. They show that the wisdom of Solomon includes the importance of correction and discipline, delivered through careful teaching. This kind of wisdom requires not only understanding but also the ability to use it correctly. Seeking wisdom means knowing the truth deeply enough to share it with others in a way that helps them make good choices in their lives.
