Discretion will keep you,
Discernment will guard you,
To deliver you from the way of evil,
From the man who speaks perverse things;
From those who forsake the paths of uprightness
To walk in the ways of darkness;
Who are glad to do evil
And they rejoice in the perversity of evil;
Whose paths are crooked,
And who are devious in their tracks.
Proverbs 2:11-15
In these proverbs, Solomon emphasizes that evil can take many forms and often appears when people stray from the right path and choose the wrong one. He notes that some individuals might even feel a sense of happiness in their choice to embrace this dark path, despite the negative outcomes that can follow. Imagine a world where truth gets turned upside down—where lies are accepted as truth, and what is wrong is praised as right. Those who embrace this way of thinking often encourage others to join them. This can be a tough situation for those who are innocent or lack strength of character. That’s why Solomon is passionately urging his son to choose wisdom and stay on the right path.
